What are symptoms of pregnancy?

A symptom of pregnancy can be any indicator or sign that your body is about to undertake a huge journey for the next 40 weeks. Any changes in your body may be indicative of a pregnancy.

It's important to be aware of any changes in your body, whether you are pregnant or not as the signs may be pointing to something other than a pregnancy but if you are pregnant, also note that you may have just a couple symptoms that you hardly notice or you may experience all symptoms, every woman is different and so is their experience of pregnancy.

Classic pregnancy symptoms

No period

The most obvious symptom of pregnancy would be the lack of a period! If you have a fairly regular cycle and have passed the usual date for your period, you may want to take a pregnancy test to ascertain whether or not you are pregnant.

My breasts feel tender

During the first few weeks of pregnancy, the hormone changes going on in your body may make your breasts feel quite tender and swollen.

I'm so tired

The excitement and emotion of finding out you are pregnant can be emotionally draining and this can make you feel more tired than usual. Increasing levels of the hormone HCG and a higher body temperature will also make you feel more like an afternoon nap.

I need to pee so much!

Even though your baby is not yet sitting on your bladder your uterus expands during early pregnancy and you will feel the need to go to the toilet more often.

I feel sick

Morning sickness is a common complaint in pregnancy and can affect women in different ways and to varying degrees and can involve just feeling queasy or vomiting as well. For more info see our morning sickness page.

My back aches

Lower backache can be common throughout your pregnancy and during the early stages may be no worse than any back aches you may feel during a regular period.
