Each month there is a period during which you are most likely to fall pregnant, this is your fertile period and sex during this time has a higher chance of resulting in a pregnancy.

When Am I Fertile?

Ovulation usually occurs 14 days before a woman is due her period. This is regardless of the cycle length and means that a woman with a 28 day cycle will ovulate on Day 14 of her cycle but a woman with a 31 day cycle will ovulate on Day 17.

On an average 28 day cycle this could mean that a woman's fertile period is between 12-16 days before the start of her next period. If you do have a regular cycle then calculating your fertile period according to your ovulation date and cycle length is a good indicator of when you are most likely to fall pregnant and is sometimes known as the "Calendar Method" of predicting fertile periods.

If you are familiar with the monthly changes your body goes through then it should be easy enough for you to also detect the small changes in your body that occur around the time of ovulation.

Checking Your Fertile Period

Each month there will be a small shift in your body temperature as you ovulate and your temperature may rise between 0.4 and 1.0 degrees celsius. As you release an egg, your progesterone levels are stirred and it is this that increases your temperature. You can purchase sensitive thermometers that chart your Body Basal Temperature.

You may also notice a change in the consistency of the cervical mucus and as you approach your ovulation date you may notice that it becomes clear and stringy and it may stay like that for a couple of days up until you ovulate.

Once an egg is released and a woman ovulates, there is a window of 24 hours for the egg to be fertilised. Sperm can survive for up to 7 days following intercourse and so unprotected sex in the week leading up to a woman's ovulation date could result in pregnancy.

Studies show that an average fertile couple has around a 20% chance of getting pregnant during each of your cycles and a huge majority of around 85% will fall pregnant within the first 12 months of not using any contraception.

If you have an irregular cycle it is going to be more difficult to predict when your ovulation day is. Keeping a diary to have an idea of any pattern at all to your cycle may help you identify a potential range of dates during which ovulation may occur and if you are trying to conceive this may give you an idea of when best to try.

Use our fertility calculator to predict your ovulation dates to increase your chances of falling pregnant.
