Will I get Morning Sickness?
enerally speaking, the majority of pregnant women will experience morning sickness to some degree but it is usually restricted to just the first trimester.
What does morning sickness involve?
Morning sickness can mean a nausea feeling alone, or nausea as well as vomiting. Unfortunately for some women, morning sickness can make the early stages of their pregnancy an altogether less pleasant experience!
What causes morning sickness?
Morning sickness is thought to be caused by the increase in estrogen in the body but there are a wide range of opinions covering everything from hormones to a heightened sense of taste and smell to just delicate stomachs adapting to the pregnancy.
There's no real definitive answer but it is certain that your body will be undergoing major changes and the different hormones now at work will certainly be at the source of this!
How can I reduce the nausea?
There are many recommended ways to reduce the effects of morning sickness and it is worth asking other mothers if they have any tried and tested ways of helping the sick feeling.
Generally you should eat smaller meals and more frequently and if you get morning sickness in the mornings (remember, morning sickness can get you at any time of the day!) then many swear by a few crackers before you get up. Once your body begins to digest the crackers or biscuits the feeling may subside.
Avoid anything that may make you feel more nauseous such as particular smells or foods and keep hydrated with regular drinks and avoid hot stuffy places.
Foods like ginger and lemon are also thought to help so why not try a freshly made cup of tea with lemons and ginger.
Will my baby be affected by my morning sickness?
No. Your baby will not be affected by your morning sickness but if you are worried at any point about this, or about any other aspect of your pregnancy you should consult your doctor or health professional.
You will begin to put on weight during the second trimester so you also shouldn't worry about any vomiting affecting you putting on weight during weeks 5 - 12.
You may also want to take a pregnancy vitamin if you are concerned about getting the right vitamins and minerals during your pregnancy.
When does morning sickness stop?
Morning sickness will usually subside after the first trimester but an unlucky number of women may have to wait another month until the nausea goes away.
