Postnatal care in Spain

Postnatal care is the name given to the programme of assistance and support a new mum can expect to receive after having a baby.

Postnatal care can include physical checks, well being checks, advice and information on doing things correctly with baby such as feeding etc.

Postnatal care in Spain is a little different to the care provided in the UK and is often thought by UK mothers to be a little lacking. My Baby Spain explores the postnatal care options in Spain...

Postnatal Care

Postnatal care can be a lifeline for some new mothers who are eager to ask questions and to know they are doing everything correctly to ensure a happy and healthy baby. Experiences of postnatal care in Spain can be varied as traditionally most new mothers would be taken under the care of their large family and shown the ropes and looked after in Spain and this doesn't happen quite the same in countries such as the UK.

Postnatal Care in Spain

While your baby will have periodic development checks, the traditional home visits from a midwife are not always part and parcel of having a baby in Spain and in fact, postnatal care is generally not offered. You may need to look into private postnatal care if you want.

What does postnatal care involve?

Postnatal care in Spain from a midwife would usually involve all aspects of physical and emotional well being and development for both the mother and the child. A mother will be checked to ensure her vital stats have returned to normal, that there is no infection of the breats, uterus or areas where the episiotomy may have been done. The new mother will be asked how she is feeling and finding things and the job of the midwife during postnatal care is to ensure everything is as it should be and that as many questions as possible can be answered.
