Pregnancy Scans Week 12 | Trimester 2

Pregnancy Scans & Hospital Appointments Continued….

Appointment 3 – Scan 2: 12 week scan – 03.11.10:

All geared up for this one, Mike was looking forward to the 12 week ultrasound a great deal and was fairly emotional the first time he saw the baby on the screen. I was intrigued as to what exactly the blood and urine had been tested for and had hoped that Dr. Bazán would be able to explain. As it turns out, at this appointment we saw Dr. Freddy Simon Simon and in the excitement of seeing more of a developing baby on the screen it didn’t occur to me to stop and ask about any specifics of the tests for the vials of blood I had given away. Armed with the results though Dr. Simon said there was nothing out of the ordinary and nothing to worry about on the results.

Dr. Simon didn’t speak much English so I translated the little information we were treated to for Mike. We were told that the size of the baby was in line with expectations of a 12 week old foetus and that it had a healthy heartbeat.

With the scan over, I was given a further slip of paper to go upstairs from the scan suites to the blood testing area where I had been a couple weeks earlier to have the Down’s Syndrome blood test which is due between week 8 and week 13 + 6 days. Once again, I was told the results would be due the following week.

The whole appointment seemed to go so quickly but it was nonetheless awesome and felt like we had reached a big milestone by sharing the first special moment of having seen our baby on the screen together as parents to be.

Having been seriously impressed with seeing his child for the first time, Mike was eager for more and no sooner had we reached the car, he had called a private clinic in Marbella to arrange a 4D scan for as soon as possible. The Trimester 1 12 week scan pictures were clear enough for us to work out a limb or two but as we wanted to send a scan image to Mike’s mum for her birthday at the end of the month by way of surprising her about the pregnancy, we also wanted clearer images to send her. The first of our 4D baby scans was arranged with Dr. Berral for the following day 04.11.10.

Pregnancy Scans: Trimester 1

5 ultrasounds and a couple of hospital appointments in and I realise I haven’t written any blog posts about the ones we have had! So here’s an overview of the first couple appointments and pregnancy scans we had during Trimester 1 weeks 9 – 11

Not only have there been 3 baby scans at the USP Marbella as part of the ongoing private pregnancy healthcare but we have also had two independent 4D scans at a private practise in Marbella. There was an additional charge for the two 4D baby scans but as Mike says, 100-150€ to ensure every part of your baby is healthy is a small price to pay and could easily be spent on a meal anyway!

Appointment 1 & Scan 1 – 15th October 2010: Booking In Appointment and First Visit

Wasn’t expecting this one and as a result, didn’t have Mike with me. He was extremely gutted to have missed the first opportunity to see his child for the first time but as we were already in week 9 he didn’t have long to wait until the 12 week scan.

As part of the regular checking in appointment I was expecting to have bloods taken and to have a urine test to confirm pregnancy but instead I got to see the little blob of a future baby on a scan and then had the blood and urine tests the following week!

In truth, the scan pictures were fairly unimpressive and all you can manage to see is a white blob on a darkened background. Hearing the heartbeat for the first time was seriously impressive though!

Dr. Bazán explained that there would be another scan at 12 weeks and then 20 weeks and following that there would be check-up appointments every 4-5 weeks after that until week 38 when the final checks would be done to assess pregnancy at that stage etc. At each hospital appointment so far I have seen different doctors and I remember Dr. Pedro Bazán from the first scan appointment as being one of the more useful and informative doctors at the USP.

Appointment 2 – Blood Tests: 20.10.10

The blood tests appointment was a fairly casual affair and after a short wait with several others I was ushered to a room with a couple of big chairs and had a couple of vials full of blood taken, a small cup to pee in and told I could collect the results the following week.

I had thought these tests would be simply to confirm pregnancy but according to the 7 pages of test results I appear to have been tested for quite a few things, and not just a pregnancy. The “Hemograma Completo” has results for Glucose, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Herpes virus, HIV, Rubella and several other items which I’m not sure I would know even if they were written in English.

12 Weeks Pregnant!

Finally it’s official – I am 12 weeks pregnant!

It feels like such a long time has passed since we found out about the pregnancy at around week 5 and we’re both incredibly relieved and happy to announce that this morning we had the 12 weeks scan at the USP Marbella and can happily report that little Pip was kicking around this morning and has a healthy heart beat, and also that there’s only 1 in there!

We did also have a scan at 9 weeks + 2 days to confirm pregnancy and since then we’ve also brought a Foetal Doppler machine to be able to listen to the heart beat whenever we want.

So far there hasn’t been any morning sickness at all and only increased tiredness around weeks 5-8 and I am hoping that the rest of the pregnancy is just as smooth!

I’ve been keeping a diary since we found out and am hoping to integrate older blog posts from weeks 4/5 to 12 alongside current posts from today’s start of Trimester 2 onwards so for updates on Sarah’s pregnancy at currently approx 28 weeks or mine at a fledgling 12 weeks get read the baby blog I’ll be keeping or check out the feed via the My Baby Spain Facebook page!
