Mummy Meetup at Funky Forest

Down on the Costa del Sol there is quite a strong sense of networking amongst the ex-pat mums. Whether it’s the feeling of group solidarity, of being in the same boat together having children in a foreign country or just an openness and willingness to meet other mums, the number of ex-pat mums on the coast is pretty big and as such, there are regular mummy meetups.

Last week about 8 of us met up at Funky Forest in Estepona. Many of us knew each other but there were also some new faces and everyone came with their baby or toddler.

Funky Forest has been around for around 18 months I think and has been established as a family friendly cafe that also runs various workshops, classes and also has a play area outside. Laura the owner, has thought through each area of the cafe to ensure it offers a space for babies and toddlers to enjoy some freedom whilst in a safe and confined area. There are rabbits that roam around freely and if you’re lucky you might get the chance to feed them too! In the summer the little ones can help tend to the veggie patch and play on the play frame and in the wooden hut, play with the train track or just chase rabbits! There is a full timetable of classes such as cookery for children, Chinese or Russian language lessons, HartBeeps movement and music classes, Pilates Para Ti classes to do with your baby with Sophie Hoffman and much more!

The menu has also been well thought out with fresh ingredients and child friendly portions and balanced meals such as chicken breast goujons with chips, sweetcorn and cherry tomatoes. The adults are just as well served! Open all day you can also catch breakfast there or have a mid-morning muffin or brownie (we did this all!)

For more info, visit the website: Funky Forest

Directions to Funky Forest

Overall I thought it was a thoroughly well thought out location to take my 2 year old where we would both enjoy what’s on offer. My only niggle is that I didn’t find it sooner! This was because I didn’t have directions the first time I tried to find it and tried to go on instinct. It didn’t work! To get to Funky Forest from San Pedro/Marbella way, head down towards Kidz Kingdom at the Cancelada turn off. Take that exit, go over the N340 and back on to the N340 in the opposite direction. You need to take the 3rd mini exit from the N340 – the first of which is pretty much immediately as you get back on to the N340, the 2nd one takes you down to the red brick hotel, and the 3rd one runs parallel to the N340 and is the one you should take. Funky Forest is signposted from there and easy to find with easy parking outside. Funky Forest can be seen from the road but is covered by big trees, it is almost directly opposite the Centro Comercial Mustang where Golfriends is.

That should get you there!

Pilates on the Costa del Sol

If you’re looking for a fun way to exercise and keep fit and are based on the Costa del Sol, you may be interested in the Pilates classes offered by Pilates Para Ti!

Starting this week, Sophie Hoffman of Pilates Para Ti! has let us know that there is a new Pilates class being held each Saturday in Torreguadiaro at the Chambao Beach Bar from 11.30am. Right on the beach, under their umbrellas and just 5€ per class.

In addition to the beach classes, Sophie continues to run the Mum & Baby classes at the San Roque International School on Tuesdays from 11am and for the hot summer months the classes have moved into a large fully equipped air-conditioned classroom. You can also always arrange private classes for individual and group sessions, by arrangement.

If you want to know more, give Sophie a call on (+34) 600 214 977 or on pilatesparati@gmail.com or visit the Pilates Para Ti! Facebook page.

Costa del Sol Mother and Toddler Groups

Since early this year we have had a mummy meet-up group in the Mijas area of the Costa del Sol.

Growing from a small group of 3 mummies-to-be, the group now has now grown to 10+ members, many of whom have also been fellow pregnant women looking to meet others in the same boat.

Many of us had taken ante-natal classes together and wanted to continue to meet after the classes to have a natter about the latest tests we had to have done or the most recent scan photos we had, we would also compare aches and pains and bump sizes all over fruit juices, sparkling water and of course what had become the obligatory slice of cake, or two or three….

Mummy Meetup Groups on the Western Costa del Sol

Since having regular meetups and a proactive Facebook interaction amongst the mummies based around on the more eastern side of the Costa del Sol (Malaga to Marbella/San Pedro area approx.) it’s become more apparent that there are also lots of mummies based around the Gibraltar to San Pedro/Marbella area who would also like to go to mummy meet-up groups!

In all honesty, I did think there were more Mother & Toddler groups based around San Pedro, Sotogrande, Guadalmina areas already with nothing around the Mijas area but feedback from the My Baby Spain Facebook page shows that there’s a healthy amount of interest in having a new group in the area and there are a few mummies who’ve already expressed an interest in getting involved to help organise the groups. The following information covers a round up of the feedback so far concerning suggestions for meetup locations and when.

Please please add your comments and help to whittle down the most appropriate locations and to let us know whether there are already groups in certain areas that could be publicised a bit more to our interested mummies or whether you could organise regular events on our Facebook page for a local meetup.

As soon as this is done we can potentially help set up new groups!

Feedback & Suggested Meetups for west Costa del Sol

1) The Estepona – San Pedro area as suggested by Rachel Warburton
a) Los Arcos, Benavista as suggested by Rachel Warburton
b) The Oak, Benamara as suggested by Rachel Warburton
c) Galaxia Play Centre, Guadalmina
On Friday mornings from 11am you can pop along to the drop in baby clinic run by Marion Hughes, our resident Costa del Sol midwife for baby weighing, weaning advice etc. The cost of the drop in clinic is 12 euros and there is a toddler group at the play centre too.

2) Gibraltar / Sotogrande
The former site of the Terrasana cafe in Sotogrande as suggested by Natalie Guyan (any more details on this Natalie?)

Other Locations

We’ve also got mummies looking for meetup groups in Huercal Overa Almeria, Costa Blanca, La Coruña so it would be fab for other local mums to get in touch asap so that they can buddy up with other local mums to get something going!

Feel free to continue to add comments to the My Baby Spain Facebook page – soon enough we should get at least a few mums from the same area in touch with each other!
