It may be that in the UK we are all pretty familiar with the concept of a baby shower but over here in Spain, the idea is not as well known, and as of yet, I don’t think there’s even a translation for it with Spaniards speaking of “un baby shower” and by way of explanation they continue with, “es una fiesta o reunión de amigas y familia para celebrar que una del grupo está embarazada” (it’s a party or mini gathering of friends and family to celebrate the pregnancy of one of the group”.
I’ve just read an interesting article in a hola.com blog that goes a long way to explaining, in Spanish, what a baby shower in Spain involves. The blog explains the basic concepts of a baby shower and that it is a party held in honour of the mother to be and attended by close friends and family. The blog references English TV and explains that they are usually held in the 6th – 7th month of pregnancy.
As in the UK and indeed the US where the idea originated, a Spanish baby shower is celebrated in much the same way with food and drink and gifts for the mother.
I’ve been to a few baby showers myself and am pretty good at the guess-the-size-of-the-bump games and have enjoyed every one so far. Word has it I am probably going to another baby shower in a few months but I’ll keep schtum on that news for the moment! I already know what gift I’ll be taking to that party though – a fabby nappy cake made by The Baby Cake Fairy. Having seen photos a while back it’s already on the My Baby Spain list of recommended baby gifts for any baby shower Spain and also gets a mention in the article! If you have a friend who’s pregnant in Spain then speak to The Baby Cake Fairy about a nappy cake for her. Now I just need to wait for the word on whether a pink one or a blue one is needed for my friend….
